7 of you joined us face-to-face on Tuesday for our SUSU council meeting!
Huge well done to Leon for doing such a good job at chairing the meeting! Watch this space to see more updates like these in the future.
This time, we were joined by the Director of Education, Jack Newton, to discuss the lack of understanding of care experienced young people in some schools and how frustrating it can be for people in this situation.
One big challenge with schools is that a lot of them are part of ‘multi- academy trusts’, which means that Devon County Council is not directly responsible for them.
Jack asked whether we would be interested in campaigning for Multi-Academy Trusts to accept Care Experience as a protected Characteristic, since Devon County Council already has.
We discussed what this might look like, what this would mean, and how we could work together with Jack and others. Some suggestions included: running a Total Respect Taster training session, bringing school leaders together, and getting DCC’s senior leaders on board.
Those who were at this meeting agreed it would be a great project for us to get involved in!
We then focussed on the issue of housing and home and identified our key priorities in this area, particularly for 18+ housing and transitions.
This feedback will be shared with the ‘Care for Me’ subgroup of the Corporate Parenting Board.
