Important information
Social worker and Personal Advisor
We have mentioned your social worker and Personal Advisor a few times. Here is a bit more detail about their jobs.
A Social worker is trained to understand all the issues and challenges you may have to manage in the UK. They can give you advice and help but also support you to access leisure activities and courses to develop your skills. They want the best for you. It is their job to make sure you are safe from any harm. If anything is not working out well, they can try to sort it out. They understand the legal processes of your asylum claim. They stop working with you when you turn 18.
A Personal Advisor (PA) is someone who works with young adults in a similar way to a social worker. They work alongside you from 16 and 9 months until you are 21, but if you still need support you can choose to keep seeing them until you are 25.
They will support you with:
- Training and employment opportunities
- Developing your independence skills
- Finding somewhere suitable to live
- Managing your finances and claiming benefits
- Your health and wellbeing.
- Your PA will meet with you regularly.
For more details about what support you can access from Devon County Council, take a look at Devon’s Local Offer to Care Leavers if you are aged 16 – 25 or The Promise if you are under 16.
