Your identity and sense of belonging

Understanding our own identity, background and who we are as individuals helps us find our place in the world.

Having a strong sense of identity and belonging helps us feel safe, confident and comfortable in being ourselves. It also helps us have better relationships with the people around us.

Our identity and sense of belonging is shaped by our background and experiences in life. Growing up in care is one part of this, and even though it is important, it does not define anyone who grows up in care.

As a child or young person in care, you have a right to know your life-story if you would like to know. This includes your background, who your birth family are, and why you came into care.

You can speak with your social worker if you want to know more about your background and life-story.

You may also want to speak with someone about your gender identity or sexual orientation. Your carers and workers are trained in how to have these kinds of conversations and they are there to support you. But, if you don’t feel comfortable talking to them, there are health professionals, youth workers and others, as well as online advice and guidance, who you can turn to for support.

Your social worker or PA will be trained to understand all these kinds of thoughts, feelings and questions and be able to support you with them. They are open-minded and experienced people. They may even have personal experiences themselves. Talking to a supportive adult really helps – and sometimes professional mental health support is needed too.

If you would like to explore what other advice and support is out there, here are a few useful links:

  • It can help if you meet with other young people who ‘get it’.  The Participation team run small youth groups for young people who are care-experienced where you can explore your identity safely. DM us on Instagram (@standupspeak) if you would like to find out more about our groups.
  • If you would like to explore your gender or sexual identity specifically, Space youth services run a group called Xplore. There is also a trusted LGBT+ led charity based in Devon called Intercom Trust. They have a helpline, counselling service, support and advocacy offer, youth groups and more.
