Making your voice heard and knowing your rights

Having your voice heard, especially in the decisions which affect your life, is a fundamental right for all young people. As you get older, become more independent and approach adulthood, it is important you know how you can have your say and get involved.

When we say have your voice heard, what we mean is being able to express an opinion on something and to be taken seriously by the adults who support you. This could be about something really specific to you and your life, or it could be having a role to play in shaping how whole services are designed and delivered, in Devon or across the country.

How you can get involved:

  • Devon County Council’s Participation team are a team of youth workers whose job it is to help you have your voice heard. They run dedicated groups throughout the year for young people in care and care-experienced young adults who have recently left care, as well as running events with managers and senior leaders so young people can speak directly with them about the things that matter to them. This is a great way of making change happen. You can find out more by exploring the rest of this website.
  • Nationally, Become is a great charity which supports care-experienced children and young people.
