A big thank you to all the care leavers who took the time to fill out our education, employment and training survey this summer!

The results have been very useful in helping us to identify areas where you’d like to see more opportunities being made available. We’re working to make sure that we provide you with options that are more relevant to you and your interests – and that way, we can be more aspirational for you too!

So far, we’ve shared the results with Step Forward, and they have already expanded the range of apprenticeships that they offer. We’re also working hard with partner agencies to be able to offer a variety of work experienced placements for care leavers in the near future.

Key findings

Here are some of the key findings from the survey.

You said that financial support would be the most helpful thing to help you achieve their goals (selected by 14 people). Other options that you said would be useful were:

  • Help with getting the equipment you need to do the job – 13
  • Understanding your options – 12
  • 1:1 support – 12
  • Support with mental health – 10
  • Employability skills workshops – 10
  • Specific work or training opportunities for care-experienced people – 10

‘Health and Care’ and ‘Social Services/Local Authority’ were the sectors that you were most interested in working in – each received 9 selections. Other popular picks were ‘Farming and Agriculture’ (6), Construction (5), Food and Drink (5) and Retail (5).

80% of you said that you would want to do an apprenticeship, traineeship, internship or work experience to build up your skills and experience.
